5 Functions of Quotation Marks

5 Functions of Quotation Marks 5 Functions of Quotation Marks 5 Functions of Quotation Marks By Mark Nichol This post examines the utilization of quotes to recognize exchange, portions of organizations, phrases as expressions, alarm statements, and appellations. 1. For Dialog Quotes are put around discourse in fiction (to recognize it from attribution and story) and verifiable (for similar reasons, notwithstanding accentuating that it is recorded verbatim and not a summary of the genuine wording). Quotes are additionally suitable for approximated discourse (for instance, â€Å"What in the event that he says, ‘We’re utilizing John’s plan instead’?) or for speaking to the possibility of discourse (â€Å"People frequently state ‘myself’ when they should state ‘me’). Note: In models in this and different posts, cited material is frequently encased in single instead of twofold quotes since I utilize twofold quotes to outline the models. In American English, other than in unique cases, for example, setting off terms in herbal science, etymology, and theory, this is the main universally useful for single quotes. 2. For Parts of Compositions Note: The accompanying principles relate to when titles of parts of creations are referenced in a composed account, not to their utilization as headings in the source material itself. Quotes recognize article titles in distributions and section titles in books to recognize the pieces of the entire from the entire itself. (Emphasize the distribution titles themselves; one special case is unpublished original copies, the titles of which are likewise encased in quotes.) Similarly, scenes of TV programs, just as those of other varying media (or sound just) introductions, for example, web recordings, ought to be encased in quotes, while program titles are stressed. Melody titles, as well, are set in quotes to recognize them from collection titles. Quotes additionally recognize sonnets, papers, and short stories to recognize their titles from those of the treasurys of which they might be (or may initially have been) a section. In online settings, titles of blog passages, and those of areas of sites, are encased in quotes. Titles of discourses, just as those of talks and boards that are a piece of gatherings and other proper gathering occasions, are additionally so accentuated. 3. For a Phrase as a Phrase Albeit self-referential words are stressed (as in â€Å"Moon and month are related†), phrases as expressions are encased in quotes (as in â€Å"‘Reared its appalling head’ is a clichã ©.) 4. For Scare Quotes Words and expressions are some of the time encased in quotes to flag that they are being utilized from an exceptional perspective, however this utilization is best held for amusing accentuation or to explain that the essayist is utilizing yet not embracing the term. Utilizing such accentuation for slang isn't prompted. 5. For Epithets At the point when monikers are utilized in separation, don't wall them in quotes (â€Å"The film was discharged four months after the passing of the King of Pop†). However, do so when they show up inside or after the person’s genuine name: â€Å"John ‘Duke’ Wayne,† â€Å"Erwin Rommel, ‘the Desert Fox.’† (But contrast the last mentioned and â€Å"Alexander the Great lived to be just thirty-three,† in which â€Å"Alexander the Great† is so styled in light of the fact that the appellation is incorporated with the name, not set off by accentuation.) Remote and Local Studies Foreign Studies According to the examination paper of Syed Saad Andaleeb and Carolyn Conway distributed at November 3, 2009, the accompanying elements influence the restaurant’s deals. Item quality Because the â€Å"product offering† for a full help café is probably going to be surveyed by assessing a real item (the supper) and by where it is conveyed (physical spot), we chose to isolate the substantial quality measurement in SERVQUAL into its two viewpoints: food quality and the physical plan/style of the eatery. The previous has been examined before alongside unwavering quality. From the point of view of physical plan, ecological therapists propose that people respond to places with two general, and inverse, types of conduct: approach or evasion (Mehrabian and Russell, 1974). It has been proposed that notwithstanding the physical components of a business drawing in or stopping determination, the physical plan of a business can likewise impact the level of accomplishment shoppers achieve once inside (Darley and Gilbert, 1985). This includes explore on the â€Å"services cape† (Bitner, 1992) which is the â€Å"built man-made environment† and how it influences the two clients and representatives in the administration procedure. Along these lines, we recommend that; the better the physical structure and presence of the eatery, the more prominent the degree of consumer loyalty. Value The cost of the things on the menu can likewise significantly impact Customers since cost has the ability of drawing in or Repelling them (Monroe, 1989), particularly since value works as a pointer of value (Lewis and Shoemaker, 1997). The estimating of eatery things likewise differs as indicated by the sort of café. On the off chance that the cost is high, clients are probably going to anticipate high caliber, or it can instigate a feeling of being â€Å"ripped off. Similarly, if the cost is low, clients may scrutinize the capacity of the eatery to convey item and administration quality. Additionally, because of the intensity of the café business, clients can build up inward reference costs. When setting up costs for a café, an inward reference cost is characterized as a cost (or value scale) in buyers’ memory that fi lls in as a reason for judging or looking at real costs (Grewal et al. , 1998). This shows the value offering for the café should be as per what the market hopes to pay by maintaining a strategic distance from negative deviation (I. . at the point when real cost is higher than the normal cost). We suggest that; the less the understanding of the genuine cost with desires (negative deviation), the lower the degree of consumer loyalty. Healthcare Case Study History Of Nasal Congestion And Cough - 1100 Words

Healthcare Case Study: History Of Nasal Congestion And Cough (Case Study Sample) Content: Healthcare Case Study 2Students Name:Institutional affiliation:Date:CaseKaitlyn is a 4-year-old with a 2-day history of nasal congestion and cough in the early morning. Her mother reports thick, green nasal discharge. She is afebrile, and appetite and sleep are normal. Physical examination reveals: lungs clear to auscultation, tympanic membranes pearly gray without fluid in a neutral position, no cervical adenopathy, nasal turbinates are red, and clear rhinorrhea and postnasal drip.Diagnosis: Allergic RhinitisAccording to Perkin et al. (2015), the history of patients suffering from allergic rhinitis is usually straightforward. However, sometimes the history of such a patient might involve a number of other complex symptoms. Among children, Scadding (2015) indicates that symptoms such as nasal congestion and discharge indicate allergic rhinitis. From the case study, the basal congestion and discharge are clearer signs of rhinitis. Among children, periodic coughs such a s coughs in the morning as indicated in the case study may be elicited among children with allergic rhinitis. In most cases, the nasal discharge may be pale or green as indicated in the case. Moreover, findings from the case study reveal that the patient has reddened nasal turbinate with clear rhinorrhoea. In this sense, the definitive diagnosis for Kaitlyn reveals that she suffers from allergic rhinitis.Although there are other diagnostic tests that are relevant in confirmation of the diagnosis, Scadding (2015) admits that patients history helps in determining the possible condition that the patient suffers from. For instance, other necessary tests such as imaging studies, allergic skin tests as well as general examination tests can help in determining other possible conditions affecting the patient. However, the presentation of the condition in this case reveals that the child suffers from allergic rhinitis. In order to confirm the diagnosis, the differential diagnoses must be rul ed out.Differential DiagnosisPerkin et al. (2015) indicate that allergic rhinitis is often confused with acute sinusitis. Ideally, the symptoms of acute sinusitis are also similar to the symptoms of allergic rhinitis. In acute sinusitis, the lining of the nasal sinuses are often red. Perkin et al. (2015) say that most cases of sinusitis occur with allergic rhinitis as an accompanying condition. This is the reason why acute sinusitis is sometimes referred to as Rhinosinusitis. In acute sinusitis, the symptoms and signs include redness of the nose, eyelids and cheeks, postnatal discharge, congested nose, persistent coughing with pharyngeal irritation. However, in most cases of sinusitis, patients must experience fever. From the case study, the patient presents with some of these symptoms. However, this does not indicate that the patient suffers from acute sinusitis. Rather, absence of other symptoms such as the pain, fever, hyposmia, the referred pain to cheeks and face is an indicato r that the child suffers from acute rhinitis. Additionally, the fact that the symptoms are only visible in the morning is an adequate indicator that the patient suffers from acute rhinitis.TreatmentIn order to treat allergic rhinitis, treatment must be divided into three main categories including elimination of the allergen, medication and using an allergen-specific immunotherapy. According to Perkin et al. (2015), allergic rhinitis is caused by allergens that children are exposed to. From the case study, it is evident that the child could be allergic to cold. In this manner, it is important to prevent the child from the cold temperatures in the morning. This will help in reducing possible allergic reactions to cold. When it comes to the use of allergen-specific medication, the child could be given corticosteroid injections.MedicationMedications used in allergic rhinitis include antihistamines, saline, decongestants, sodium cromolyns as well as antileukotrienes (Warman, Granot Halp erin, 2015). These medications can be used as intranasal medication or as injectable. For instance, saline can be used in order to help in decongesting Kaitlyns congested nose. However, the healthcare provider should consider the use of oral therapy as it will make it easier to administer as compared to the other forms of medication. For instance, Kaitlyn should be given allergy-specific immunotherapy (Cetrizine) to help her from the allergic responses in the morning. Ideally, she can benefit from 5mg per oral. Four times a day. This can help reduce the cough as well as nasal congestion and irritation. On the other hand, she can be given 5mg of Loratidine four times a day. These medications will help in reducing the allergic reactions in the patient thu...

I Am A High School Media Specialist - 962 Words

Component One~ PGE 1 Leadership The context for this PGE covers my development in the area over the past 10 years, beginning in 2007 when I first became a high school media specialist. In the beginning, as I was learning, I was given few leadership roles. The first two years were spent shadowing and learning from my co-media specialist, who had twenty-five years of experience. When media needed representation, she filled the leadership role. She did give me the opportunity to accompany her to meetings at the school and county level. This turned out to be very helpful, as 2008 brought about a new opportunity for me to plan and open a brand new media center at a new high school. As this school would employ only one media specialist, I had autonomy over collection development and technology planning. I developed my leadership skills throughout the 2008-2009 school year. I worked alongside the principal, lead teacher, system superintendent and other stakeholders. I attended meetings rang ing from building layout and infrastructure, to technology planning for classroom, to collections and materials for the media center as well as throughout the school. In the spring of 2009, I joined what would later become our leadership team for the opening of the new school. I was able to identify the figures appearing ahead. They were three young men with their surfboards under arm, gearing up for a morning surf. Jogging towards the waters edge, the wild wind whistled through their vivid blonde hair, violently blowing it across their faces. Diving into the ocean, they headed towards the big swell splashing their way there. Reluctantly, the toddlers plunge their feet into the bitter, salty water. They subtly screech, but they continue to stand motionless. The clouds above are white bundles of happiness, attracting the eyes of the people below. The shimmering sun glared upon the scorching bodies beneath, sizzling the skin of sun bathers, who are attempting to get browner and browner. Parents grasp their children before they sprint off in the distance, to smother them in white thick sun cream, to protect them from the blistering UV rays. Along the beach a vast number of families are happily playing, and interacting in sporting activities. Young boys socialise ecstatically over a game of football. Every strike at the ball caused it to hover in the sky as the wind controlled its direction. When the business reputation is positive, it influences customer order decision. In line with this, (BPR) business process redesign refers to the critical analysis and radical redesign of existing business process to achieve breakthrough improvement in the performance measure (Razaki Aydin, 2011).This process constitutes of five steps that play a critical role in the reengineering process which are identified in terms of beginning and end point. These steps include; Developing the business vision and processing the objectives. this step constitutes of specific business objectives such as cost reduction, improving the quality of product output that is send to the market and also time saving or reducing time. The step plays a role in the reengineering process as it enables the organization not to lose its focus (Asikhia Awolusi, 2015). The goes further to help build an environment that has got ethical standards which will foster the business to act in accordance to the business regulation thus evading fines and unnecessary damages to the environment. Identifying the business process to be redesigned is the second step in approaching Business process redesign (Hammer, 2011). This may involve the use of high impact approach that focuses on the most important process or those that conflict the business vision and prioritizing the in order for redesigning. This helps the planers of the business to be able to clearly take into notice the specific areas that affect the business in a negative way. It also plays the role of helping the organization to review its vision so that it can correct on the loopholes that existed within the plan of the business. The third step is to understand and measure the existing processes. this plays the role of helping us to avoid repeating old mistakes and being able to provide a baseline or foundation for future improvements in the business. The basis of reengineering process in a business is to be able to be efficient. Doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting new result is impossible. This step ensures that in the process to come up with more successful outcome, previous mistakes are avoided as it provides a clear understanding of the existing process and act as a magnifier to the business holistically. Identifying information technology levers is the fourth step in approaching (BPR). Creating an awareness of the capabilities of information technology in the organization to help being updated with the resent inventions and be at par with other competing companies thus enhancing productivity and profit (Chen Tsai, 2018). The changing world of business calls for being fully informed of the new advancement in technology so that when reengineering the BPR, all current technics are involved so that the business can act to the standards of the general market and depart from the traditional methods. It also influences the process by creating awareness to the current technological world. The fifth step of approaching the (BPR) according to Davenport (2013) is designing and building a prototype of the new process: actual design purports not to be taken as the end of the (BPR process. Rather, it should be taken as a prototype (sample) with successful iterations. This metaphor is capable of aligning the Business Process Reengineering approach so as to bring quick delivery of results, involvement and satisfaction of all the stakeholders and clients. It enables the business organization to not only concentrate on production goods but also keep in touch with the existing social responsibility and sustainability that will help build the reputation of the organization. The prototype acts as a guide that can help redefine and come up with other more innovative ideas in the business. In conclusion, the five steps in approaching the BPR are crucial as they play rudimentary role in guiding the existing business to experience success. 3.Business process begins long before the main operations of the business. One might argue that they begin at the conception of the business idea. Bang and Midelfart (2017) define a business process as a structured set of activities designed to produce a specific output. Given the wide range activities in a business, anything could simply fall to be known as a business process, thus, business process has been divided into four major categories Management Processes- Most organizations use management teams to manage and coordinate their business. According to Wageman and Hackman (2010), the management team is a group of individuals, each of whom has a personal responsibility for leading some part of an organization, [and] who are interdependent for the purpose of providing overall leadership for a larger enterprise. Managers typically set goals and priorities and make decisions that are vital to the organization. They monitor ongoing processes within the company to ensure that everything operates smoothly. Management focuses on creating the organizations values, such as determining its vision and mission, defining strategic goals and objectives, and developing a strategic plan (Ostadi, Aghdasi, Alibabaei, 2011). The objective of top management is to analyze the market environment and calculating the possibilities that the strategic goals of the organization being transformed into an actual business plan. Operational process- Business operations vary according to the type of industry, size etc. The operational process of a business made up of the main components that bring the basic income stream. Marketing, sales, product promotion are some of the parts of an operational process. Operations view the relationship between the different departments of a company. Their information flow, shared resources, time relationship and even location (Bititci, 2011). This way a company is able to allocate resource appropriately to avoid high cost. Those resources that can be shared, for example, human labour and equipment are shared to avoid high costs (Ostadi, Aghdasi, Alibabaei, 2011). Information flow is the measure of how fast information flows between activities or departments, for example between order processing and credit control or between sales and procurement departments. After identifying these relationships, operations then identifies closely coupled activities that could be traced as a business process. The role of operational management translates the business plan into action plans. They include; Supporting process - These processes assist the business process. Accounting, human resource management, technical support and customer services are some of the examples. These processes do not contribute directly to production but are completely necessary for the operational process to run (Krmmergaard, 2017). They impose regulatory constraints, governance and proper conduct on product production. The financial department supports the manufacturing and operational process, financing operations, acquiring raw materials, location etc. The role of customer services is to maintain a good relationship between the company and their clients. Administration and IT support are responsible for all the administrative work in the organization such as cleaning, security and maintenance. IT support integrates all the functional areas by developing an effective information system enabling employees and customers to perform online interactions via the internet according to Bang and Midelfart (2017) . Manufacturing processes- These departments deal with the making of the actual product that the organization sells (Anttila Jussila, 2013). The role of this functional area is to determine a product manufacturing plan based on the information provided by the sales department. Material management assists the manufacturing processes by purchasing appropriate raw materials and other components in the manufacturing. Research and development functional area assist s by conducting research on the possibilities and finding solutions to arising processes during manufacturing. Development of a new product or the improvement of an existing one can only be done using information received form research and development and sales and marketing References Altukhova, N., Vasileva, E., Yemelyanov, V. Yellow Wallpaper Essays (1698 words) - Freudian Psychology

Yellow Wallpaper The importance of the wallpaper in "The Yellow Wallpaper", and the'three' sides of Jane The 'trio' in Jane In Charlotte Perkins Gilman's "The Yellow Wallpaper", Gilman makes direct or indirect reference to objects which play a symbolic role within the context of the story and elucidate its thematic fibre, a fibre which revolves around the main character and whose essence is integrated in her inner constitution. Thus, in order to come to terms with the story and draw certain conclusions based on this fibre, it is crucial to examine these objects and what they symbolise within this thematic fibre and obtain a better understanding of the main character. The main object which forms the backdrop to this fibre and generates the thread of action is the wallpaper itself, a mirror image of the heroine Jane and her cohesive selves, an opaque medium into the subdivisions of her own mind. Jane, who is also the narrator of the story and its centre of consciousness, is recounting her domesticated and repressed way of life, as well as her husband's treatment of her as a result of her postpartum depression. What emerges, however, from Jane's exposition, becomes a sinister paradox open to diverse interpretation, for what comes to the surface as a result of Jane's constant obsession with the wallpaper is an unnerving sense that she is suffering not only from postpartum depression, but also from multiple schizophrenia. Her own narration in effect becomes an egocentric psychoanalysis where the fibre of her identities can be divested and detached little by little by the reader, and constant references to the wallpaper allow for this process since it is the wallpaper itself which forms the fibre of Jane's selves. One such instance is when Jane claims that the wallpaper changes color by night: "By moonlight- the moon shines in all night when there is a moon- I wouldn't know it was the same paper." Here, very clearly, we have a juxtaposition of two dissociated identities, with the change in the color of the wallpaper stressing the shift in both identity and role. Jane's delirium is set off by her constant shifting or playing off of self from one ego to the other. At night a different self emerges and, since the wallpaper is nothing other than a projection of Jane's selves, it becomes feasible that the wallpaper should also change aspect as one Jane is played off against the other. Furthermore, in several cases of the disease which Jane seems to show signs of, the patient loses sight of one personality as the other sets in. Hence it would be logical for Jane not to recognise the paper since it is a side of her which becomes disconnected from her conscious mind as soon as the transformation has taken place. One of Freud's theories in psychoanalysis is very explicit about this dissociation. Freud, for instance, claims that systems of thought can be split off from each other and congeal into a secondary personality that is unconscious: "We have come upon something in the ego itself which is also unconscious, which behaves exactly like the repressed- that is, which produces powerful effects without itself being conscious and which requires special work before it can be made conscious." (Sigmund Freud's The Ego and the Id, 1923, pgs. 8-9) In simple terms, repression in Freudian psychoanalysis is visualized as the split between the conscious and unconscious minds. Separate and dissociated aspects of consciousness may exist, but they are in constant conflict. The subliminal tries to emerge on the surface. The wallpaper in The Yellow Wallpaper is 'repression'; it incorporates two planes of consciousness within Jane's own mind, two planes in battle. The repressed and unconscious self behind that wallpaper is struggling to come out, but it'requires special work before it can be made conscious, and this can be seen in the violent struggle which occurs at the transition phase: "I pulled and she shook. I shook and she pulled, and before morning we had peeled off yards of that paper." Here the narrator's words reveals more than an intensity of the obsessed mind. The use of words such as "shook" and "pulled" suggest the battle between the conscious and the unconscious, the power which thrusts the unconscious into being. The wallpaper again reflects two planes of consciousness, but as it is divested by the conscious side of Jane, the repressed and unconscious side can take the role of the conscious. Also, the fact that" pulled" and "shook" switch roles in the struggle, with "I pulled"

Wwii Essays - Freemen Of The City Of London, Free Essays

Wwii Essays - Freemen Of The City Of London, Free Essays Wwii Americas involvement in World War Two When war broke out , there was no way the world could possibly know the severity of this guerre. Fortunately one country saw and understood that Germany and its allies would have to be stopped. Americas Involvement in World War two not only contributed in the eventual downfall of the insane Adolph Hitler and his Third Reich, but also came at the precise time and moment. Had the united states entered the war any earlier the consequences might have been worse. Over the years it has been an often heated and debated issue on whether the united states could have entered the war sooner and thus have saved many lives. To try to understand this we must look both at the peoples and governments point of view. Just after war broke out in Europe, President Roosevelt hurriedly called his cabinet and military advisors together. There it was agreed that the United states stay neutral in these affairs. One of the reasons given was that unless America was directly threatened they had no reason to be involved. This reason was a valid one because it was the American policy to stay neutral in any affairs not having to with them unless American soil was threatened directly. Thus the provisional neutrality act passed the senate by seventy-nine votes to two in 1935. On August 31, Roosevelt signed it into law. In 1936 the law was renewed, and in 1937 a comprehensive and permanent neutrality act was passed (Overy 259). The desire to avoid foreign entanglements of all kinds had been an American foreign policy for more than a century. A very real geographical Isolation permitted the United States to fill up the empty lands of North America free from the threat of foreign conflict(Churchill 563). Even if Roosevelt had wanted to do more in this European crisis (which he did not), there was a factor too often ignored by critics of American policy-American military weakness. When asked to evaluate how many troops were available if and when the United States would get involved, the army could only gather a mere one hundred thousand, when the French, Russian and Japanese armies numbered in millions. Its weapons dated from the first World War and were no match compared to the new artillery that Germany and its allies had. American soldiers were more at home with the horse than with the tank (Overy 273). The air force was just as bad if not worse. In September 1939 the Air Corps had only 800 combat aircrafts again compared with Germanys 3600 and Russias 10,000 . American military Aviation (AMA) in 1938 was able to produce only 1,800, 300 less than Germany, and 1,400 less than Japan. Major Eisenhower, who was later Supreme commander of the Allied forces in the second World War, compl ained that America was left with only a shell of military establishment (Chapman 234 ). As was evident to Roosevelt the United states military was in no way prepared to enter this European crisis. Another aspect that we have to consider is the peoples views and thoughts regarding the United States going to war. After all let us not forget that the American government is there for the people and by the people and therefore the peoples view did play a major role in this declaration of Neutrality. In one of Roosevelts fireside chats he said We shun political commitments which might entangle us In foreign wars...If we face the choice of profits or peace-this nation must answer, the nation will answer we choose peace ,in which they did. A poll taken in 1939 revealed that ninety-four per cent of the citizens did not want the united states to enter the war. The shock of World War one had still not left ,and entering a new war, they felt, would be foolish. In the early stages of the war American Ambassador to London was quoted saying Its the end of the world, the end of everything ( Overy 261). As Richard Overy notes in The Road To War, this growing estrangement from Europe was not me re selfishness. They were the values expressed by secretary of state, Cordel Hull: a primary interest in peace with justice,

Public art Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words - 1

Public art - Essay Example According to Baca (89), modernity has it that art is no longer representation of abstract issues, rather, there are deep meanings embedded in them. Symbolism has to be taken into account when making any form of art, and especially public art (Baca, 89). In this art, the meaning is extension of the fight for equality and no segregation. Rosa Park was a real symbol of war against segregation, and by honoring her with a sculpture; the artists were keen on making her efforts resurface. Half a century ago, Rosa Park could stand against any form of inequality, segregation and injustices. She was a humble, courageous and quite a humble woman and in the circles of civil rights movement, she still represents their fight. She is placed right in the middle of a public area, and this means that she will revoke memories of civil rights movements in the past. This public art has a representation with the site. The site is public and therefore the aim intended by the artists is public. The bus station where she is placed can attract all people of different races, colors, social status and ethnicity. She is placed in such a place to show that what she fought for was for the benefits of all and not just one race, one generation or one social class. The more than $60,000 bronze statue represents not only issues of the past, but realities of the

Descriptive Statistics Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Descriptive Statistics - Case Study Example To this extent, there is not aspect of descriptive statistics that is missing since both measures of central tendency and spread are used in the study (Dellinger & Kresnow, 2010). The minorities who are included in the study are defined by their age. The study accommodated views of minors up to a minimal age of 5 years. This was based on the realization that a child of age 5 would be informed on how to wear and use a helmet when cycling. The demographic data to this effect is available in the study given that an estimated 1,725 (75%) of the children had ridden on a bicycle. Descriptive statistics is essential in this study as it allows for the summary of the data using techniques such as tables and graphical representations; thus, allowing for easy statistical commentary (Dellinger & Kresnow, 2010). The inferential statistics of the study are test of hypotheses in which the study’s hypothesis was that bicycle-related injuries among children between 5-14 years can be condensed by the usage of helmets. Subsequently, the study uses sample statistics as an inferential test to sample out a representative number of respondents for the study. This is done through the estimation of the parameters of the study. Standard t-tests are also used to examine the differences in behavior of children in wearing helmets. The p-values identified in the study are correspondent to the objectives of the study. At p

Free Essay on Homers Odyssey - Odysseus and Telemachus :: Homer Odyssey Essays

The Odyssey - Odysseus and Telemakhos At the beginning of the book Telemakhos is troubled with the suitors trying to marry his mother. He tries to keep them in line but they are rampant, especially when they're drunk. They kill Odysseus's herd for their own feedings and disrespect the house of Odysseus. So Telemakhos is obliged to search for his father because he is his last and only hope of keeping the suitors away. He is determined to search for his father and must find him at all costs. When Odysseus is stuck on the island of Kalypso, Athena had obliged him to leave the island in search of his home, Ithaka. She tells him of the memories he had there and he remembered how much he had longed for Ithaka. So he was determined to get home. Just like how Telemakhos was determined to find his father. They were destined by the gods to come together. In book 16, it talks about Telemakhos and his father talking to each other planning how they were going to take over the suitors. They talked and talked an d were happy to see each other. When Odysseus told Telemakhos that he wished to stay as a beggar for a little while and get used to the town before he attacks the suitors, Telemakhos didn't feel it was right. He knew that if he were to go into town he would be mocked by the suitors and antagonized by them. He may even be beaten. This shows that Telemakhos cares for Odysseus and his honor. But Odysseus knew that he must be a beggar until it is the right time. "Let your ribs cage up your springing heart, no matter what I suffer, no matter if they pull me by the heels or practice shots at me, to drive me out. Look on, hold down your anger." (16, 326) So Telemakhos had no choice but to agree. "Ah, father, even when danger comes I think you'll find courage in me. I am not scatterbrained." (16, 369) This may greatly affect his honor and maybe create hatred towards the suitors so he will be pumped up and ready to kill the suitors at any time.

Heart of varkness Essay

The second statement, ‘bearers of spark from the sacred fire’, however, clearly represents how the British brought Christianity and God from Britain to the people of Africa. Conrad also implements the use of bathos, undermining the rest of the paragraph, which is very jingoistic, all about the greatness of the empire. The bathos of which I am referring to is ‘The dreams of men, the seed of commonwealths, the germs of empires. ‘ The use of the word ‘germs’ is very negative, and, in a way, ‘cancels out’ all of the writing before. The next section of the novel that I wish to examine is known as the ‘Grove of Death’. It is a description of Marlow’s initial impressions and observations of the Outer Station, and all the slave labour going on. As he sees the land around him, he notices many ‘mounds of turned up earth’, and ‘wastes of excavations’, he speaks of the land as if it has been ‘raped’ of all its resources, and left as a barren wasteland. His first impressions of the African slave workers seems racist, as he compares there black, naked bodies to ants, however, it is more likely that this is just a reference to the futility and uselessness of the work that is going on. His next observation is a boiler, and an undersized railway-truck. He describes them as ‘dead’ like the ‘carcass of some animal’. There are several interpretations for this scene. One is that he has ‘personified’ the machinery, giving them similar qualities to the slaves, describing the machinery as though it has been allowed to rest, and have its job taken over by slaves. Another interpretation is that the machinery is a symbol for the empire, as the machinery is slowly decaying and rusting, the empire is also declining. Another reference to the futility of this work appears a few lines down. ‘The cliff was not in the way or anything; but this objectless blasting was all the work going on’. It is as if the slaves have just been given something to do, to keep them from sitting around. As Marlow walks further on, he sees a guard carrying a gun, and wearing a ‘jacket with one button of’. This is a very deliberate observation, though the empire seems perfect from the outside, it has imperfections. On seeing Marlow, the guard raises his gun, and tries to see who Marlow is; Marlow is sarcastic at this point, joking about how white men all look the same at a distance, referring to how black people all look the same to him from a distance. As the guard recognises Marlow and smiles, there is more sarcasm from Marlow, describing the guards trust as being ‘exalted’, and describing himself as being a ‘part of the great cause of these high and just proceedings’. Marlow then descends down the hill, towards some trees. At this point, Marlow starts commenting some more on his pity for the slaves, and the pointlessness of the work going on. The first technique used to relay this to us is Conrad’s use of short sentences, like we are part of Marlow’s thought process. His first thoughts are about how futile and pointless all the work that is going on is. He describes one of the pits that has been dug, as ‘just a hole’. As he goes towards the trees for shade, he instantly regrets it, making a direct reference to ‘Dante’s Inferno’. Dante’s Inferno is one perception of what hell would be like. His vision of hell consists of seven rings, each ring containing people who have sinned a particular way, with the rings varying degrees of punishment. He looks around, noticing the slaves, ‘objectifying’ them as ‘black shapes’. He makes an ironic comment, calling the slaves ‘helpers’ and stating how they have ‘withdrawn to die’. He talks about how they have been abandoned in a very understating way. There is another reference to Dante’s Inferno here, as he notices the ‘black shadows of disease and starvation’. Marlow then leaves the trees, but looks down to see a black slave, who has a white thread around his neck. He is startled at how strange and out of place it looks on the black skin. This is symbolic of the white men of the empire being out of place in Africa. To conclude, the ‘Heart of Darkness’ within the play refers to the inner capability to commit evil acts in all men, and the evil of the empire underneath the front of ‘spreading civilisation and the light of Christianity’. The two sections of the novel which I have chosen to examine are full of symbolic imagery, referring to the title, and raising questions in the readers mind about the greatness of Britain.
